Senior Foster Stories

SENIOR FOSTER SPOTLIGHT

Sun Cities 4 Paws is one of a handful of shelters in the nation that has a program for senior cats in which the shelter continues to provide medical care for the cat. This program started back in 2008 as a way to help get senior cats into homes and out of the shelter environment. This is still true today and we also place some younger cats with medical conditions into permanent foster homes. All of the foster parents of these cats love them as their own and the majority of them have had their foster cat(s) for many years.

Meet senior foster cat Louie and his foster parents Carol & Jerry Dolfen.

How long have you been a foster for a senior cat? We got our foster cat, Louie in 2011.

Why did you choose to become a foster? We didn’t really know anything about the Senior Foster program when we were looking for an adult cat, as our previous cat had passed. When we chose Louie, who is a beautiful silver tabby, he was estimated to be 8 years old, which made him eligible for the Senior Foster program. We were happy to become a part of the program. Please call 623-773-2246 for more information.

In your opinion, what are some of the rewards of being a foster? When we got Louie, we were told that he was not a lap cat and it might take some time for him to adjust to us. Well, it’s now been 10 years and all Louie does is beg to sit on Jerry’s lap. Louie has been a wonderful companion to us and if he’s gone for even a day, the house seems lonely and empty. We do the daily care of Louie and love him and 4 Paws does everything else as needed. This includes all of Louie’s veterinary needs: yearly checkups and shots as needed, and anything else he needs medically. The rewards of this program are huge as we couldn’t be more pleased with 4 Paws. We love our Louie even though Jerry spoils him terribly!
