How to adopt: Because adopting a cat or kitten, or any other pet, is a serious decision, 4 Paws has a team of adoption counselors trained to assist you with finding a feline companion that is likely to be a good fit for your household. They will help you get to know the cats and kittens for adoption, answer questions, and provide information about cat behavior and care.

To adopt a cat or kitten:

  • Meet the cats and kittens in-person
  • Allow at least an hour for your visit
  • Meet with an adoption counselor, fill out and sign adoption contract
  • Children under 16 must be accompanied by adult
  • Must be 18 years or older and provide proof of residence
  • Check your lease or renter’s policies prior to visiting 4 Paws
  • 4 Paws reserves the right to refuse an adoption

Policies

To ensure happy, successful, life-long adoptions for cats and adopters alike, 4 Paws adopts according to the policies below.

Indoor-Only: Because cats live much longer, safer lives indoors, 4 Paws adopts to indoor-only homes.

In rare cases, cats may be approved to go to an indoor/outdoor home. Those adopting cats designated for possible indoor/outdoor homes go through 4 Paw’s normal adoption process and sign a contract specific to indoor/outdoor situations.

Declawing: 4 Paws asks adopters not to declaw adopted cats. Your adoption counselor can provide information about the detriments of declawing, humane alternatives, and how to train a cat to use a scratching post.

For adopters looking for declawed cats, there are almost always previously declawed cats at 4 Paws awaiting adoption.

Kittens: Kittens must be 12-14 weeks old before they are available for adoption. This ensures that kittens receive a strong, healthy start in life and minimizes behavior problems because they are fully weaned and litter box trained. All kittens are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Felv+ and FIV+ Cats: 4 Paws has a small number of Felv + (Feline Leukemia Postive) FIV+ (Feline Immuno Deficiency) cats available for adoption. These cats can live relatively long and healthy lives in an indoor, low-stress environment. Because there is a risk of Felv or FIV transmission to other cats, the adoption of Felv positive or FIV-positive cats into homes with Felv or FIV-negative cats is done on a case-by-case basis. In some instances, Felv-positive or FIV-positive cats may be required to be adopted as only cats or share homes only with cats who are also Felv-positive or FIV-positive. (Felv or FIV is contagious only between cats; humans, dogs, and other non-feline pets cannot contract the disease.)

Renting with Cats: Since we want to make lifelong placements for our cats, we ask that adopters make sure their landlord allows cats and to pay any pet deposits in advance of adopting.

Cats as Gifts: 4 Paws can provide gift certificates for those wishing to give a gift adoption. Please note that adopters (the adult or adults with whom the cat will live) must meet with a cat or kitten prior to adoption; choosing a cat is a very personal decision and plays an important role in making a lifelong commitment to a new family member.

Shipping of Cats: We ask adopters to meet with and get to know the cats or kittens prior to adoption. Therefore, we do not ship cats or kittens.

Adoption fees

How much does it cost to adopt?

Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue Inc is a private, nonprofit organization that relies on individual donations, grants, and our own fundraising to operate. We receive no federal, state, or government funding.

Adoption fees help offset only some of the costs associated with providing for the cats and kittens in our care—this includes housing, food/litter, medical care, enrichment, behavior modification, and more.

Adoption fees are $100 for cats (1 year old and above) and $125 for kittens (3-11 months old).

Feline Leukemia (FELV+) and Feline Immuno Virus (FIV+) cats and kittens are $25

Purebred cats will have varied adoption fees, usually $150-$200

 Included in the adoption fee:

  • Spay or neuter surgery
  • Medical examination
  • Age-appropriate vaccinations
  • FIV/FeLV testing
  • Any additional treatment needed while in our care
Do you offer adoption discounts?

Yes! We offer two regular adoption discounts:

  • A second kitten is only $50 (a $75 savings!)
  • A second cat is only $30 (a $70 savings!)

4 Paws participates in various adoption promotions throughout the year. Adoption fees may be reduced during these events. Visit our event calendar in the top menu bar to see upcoming events and details..

Why do your adoption fees vary?

Although we believe that all cats are equally wonderful and deserving, we also know that some cats will be adopted more quickly than others. We tend to assign higher adoption fees for kittens and purebred cats. Having a variable fee allows these cats who are adopted quickly to provide a financial legacy to cats with special needs and/or who may remain at the shelter longer.

Because there is no time limit on how long an animal can stay in our adoption program, assigning higher fees to those cats who have a higher chance of getting adopted quickly also allows us to reduce the adoption fees for those animals who might spend more time in the shelter.

Regardless of where our adoption fees are set, they cover only a fraction the costs of caring for the cats who come through our program. We rely on donations and on sales in our thrift store to help us save lives. If you can make a donation in addition to your adoption fee, please consider this lifesaving gift! Your support means a lot to all the cat and people at 4 Paws. Thank you!
